2021 Rogers Scholar and Metcalfe County High School student Lindsey Bandy realized there was a need for personal care and feminine hygiene items in her school, so she organized a community drive. Lindsey asked community members to support her “Pink Project” and later donated the collected items to her school district. “This project was important to me, because I never realized there was ‘period poverty’ around me until I started this project. My school’s family resource center was so thankful that I was having this drive because they were in desperate need of the products I donated. Makes me feel good to know that I can help a young woman feel confident instead of embarrassed or ashamed.” Graduates of The Center for Rural Development’s Rogers Scholars program are required to complete a community service project.
