2020 Rogers Scholar and Garrard County High School student Carrie Bruce built and distributed bat boxes to 50 local farmers at the Boyle County Farmers Market. Carrie decided to make bat boxes for her Rogers Scholars community service project, because of the importance bats play in pest control and the ecosystem. “I’m glad I was able to complete this project that will help my local farmers and the essential bats in my community. I’ve always been an animal lover and a rural Kentucky girl. This project utilized both of those qualities when I was able to provide homes for little brown bats and natural pesticide to farmers and my community.” Each graduate of The Center for Rural Development’s Rogers Scholars program is required to complete a community service project. What an inspiring and thoughtful project, Carrie! It's amazing how something as simple as a bat box can have such a big impact on both agriculture and the environment. It also highlights how important well-designed, custom sized boxes can be whether for bats or any purpose, the right fit truly matters. Keep up the great work supporting your community and our pollinating friends!
